Tokunboh Talabi, who affectionately goes by her professional nickname, “Toki,” is a poet, playwright, director, author, and business professional. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Communications from Manhattanville College and her Master of Science in Human Services Counseling from Post University. She was born in Hartford, Connecticut, but has lived in many different places, including New York City and Africa.
She considers herself both African and African American, as her mother is from Alabama and her father is from Nigeria. The experience of being “both” heavily inspires her work, as she is able to speak from each perspective individually as well as from the intersection of the two.
Understanding the experiences of Black women in particular, Tokunboh hopes that her work serves to acknowledge, validate, and help heal Black women around the world. She is the recipient of the 2012 Harlem Arts Community Fund Grant through the Harlem Arts Alliance. She was inspired by Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf, Sandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street, and Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, in which she has both performed and directed. She was so moved and inspired by these influential works that she recognized the potential for creating her own collection of poetry, monologues, and short stories.
This body of work was also featured as part of the 2018 MaPeach Productions Juneteenth: Black Women in Theater event. In 2024, a staged reading was performed as part of the Greater Hartford Arts Council's Street Stages program. Tokunboh is currently in the early stages of establishing her production company, “Little Light of Mine Productions,” whose mission is to self-produce original works that promote justice, empowerment, and healing. Through the publication of this powerful collection, Tokunboh invites readers to join her on a journey toward justice, empowerment, and healing.
